Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST)
Prof JACKSON ODOTE
ACADEMIC TEAM LEADER (ATL)
Studies in the field of Technical and Applied Physics are full-time diploma, undergraduate, masters and PhD degree leading to Diploma in Technology, Bachelor of Technology in Technical and Applied Physics, Masters of Science in Physics, Masters of Science in Medical Physics and PhD in Physics.
The students have an opportunity to study such basic sciences such as: mathematics, chemistry, astronomy and experimental physics. Lectures on these subjects are supplemented with numerous laboratory experiments, classes and seminars in physics and technology. At the same time all students will be introduced to the use of computers in science and technology.
The two programmes (Diploma in Technology, Bachelor of Technology in Technical and Applied Physics) are designed against the background of learning by doing; offering an approach to physics for the dynamic world. In response to this identified national need, the Department of Technical and Applied Physics has mainstreamed hands-on-training in all its academic programmes which is intended to promote learning in “3D” by incorporating theory, practicals and experience.
The MSc in Applied Physics is designed to contribute to Kenya’s economic advancements by bridging the human resource gap in advanced science and technology by producing graduates who will be at the cutting edge of innovative research in critical areas of space physics, astronomy and astrophysics, materials science, nuclear science as well as electronics and instrumentation. It will bridge the interaction between science and technology to meet the demands of the highly competitive industry.
MSc in Medical Physics is designed with emphasis on application of the concepts and methods of physics to the research, diagnosis and treatment of human disease. The main areas of medical physics are treatment by ionizing radiation (radiation oncology), diagnostic imaging with X-rays, ultrasound and nuclear magnetic resonance (diagnostic radiology), diagnostic imaging with radioisotopes (nuclear medicine) and the study of radiation hazards and radiation protection (health physics).
The Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Physics is awarded in recognition of mastery in the field of Physics and upon demonstration of an ability to make substantial and creative contributions to knowledge in that field. Doctor of Philosophy will be undertaken in Physics fields including and not limited to: Condensed Matter Physics (includes Energy and renewable energy), Theoretical Physics, Geophysics, Electronics and Instrumentation, Nuclear and Radiation Physics, Laser Physics and Spectroscopy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences
