Physics is usually considered as one of the very foundational subjects in engineering and technology. A strong representation of the discipline of physics in technological and engineering colleges is usually taken for granted. A department of physics was thus considered as being absolutely essential for the university.
Most universities in the country currently offer studies in physics largely to the exclusion of its application. It is considered that while the basic knowledge in physics is important in terms of providing the foundational knowledge in the discipline, it is essential that the student is also equipped with applicable, practical, knowledge that can find a place in the industry. The department is thus designed to provide for programmes of study in technical and applied physics with strong orientation to application in industry.
On the other hand the department will run other programmes in Astronomy and Astrophysics as well as space physics. Current thematic areas include: theoretical physics, astronomy and astrophysics, space physics, condensed matter physics, solar energy and electronics and instrumentation.
